I am afraid of getting foot fungus by using a communal or community shower. What is the best way to protect myself against infection?

Having spent 4 years in a dorm, I can say that ordinary rubber slippers for the shower will protect against infection, the main thing is not to go barefoot

Like everyone else suggested, shower flip flops or shower shoes, but... a little bleach sprayed on the shower floor prior to showering may be added protection.

Use shower shoes, clean your feet using bar soap, body wash, and fungal lotion (if necessary). Always wear socks and slippers when going into the communal bathroom.
Wear regular shoes in the bathroom and flip-flops when in the shower. Communal bathrooms can be littered with invisible germs that can cause a number of diseases and infections.

Buy yourself a pair of rubber flip flops to wear in the shower. You should only use these when using the communal showers and don't wear them outside. Keep them clean and dry to avoid mold and contracting bacteria.
Wear flip flops or sandals of your choice, you can get a super cheap pair at either Walmart or the Dollar Store- this will totally help. Make sure to wear them every time you go to the bathroom and in the shower!

I think the best way to prevent this is to purchase shower shoes and wear them every time you go into the shower/bathroom. You can simply by flip flops from the dollar store, but so long as you wear them, your chances at such fungus is slim. Also, make sure you thoroughly wash your feet just to be safe.
